GIJUBHAI : Burden Of HOME ASSIGNMENT

 GIJUBHAI :
     Burden
         Of
     HOME ASSIGNMENT

are stealing valuable moments from child’s life that he spent in enjoying certain things of his interest. He has felt home assignments are creating a kind of havoc in the mind of child when after spending so many hours studying at school, he has to indulge in the same activities again at home. He portrayed child’s helplessness in following thoughts.
“It is beautiful morning; the sun has just come out and touched the earth with its golden rays. This is the moment; when one wishes to go outside and wander in the cool air of early morning but children have to finish their homework. They are not allowed to enjoy these precious moments. ”

He gave another example ─
“Child’s eyes are heavy with sleep as its now time to sleep. But he has to finish the incomplete homework. After dinner, child wishes to relax by the side of his parents, he wants to talk about many things that happened to him during the day but he is unable to do so due to the burden of homework. It could be the time for bedtime stories, or a little play outside in a moon light night. But all these opportunities would evade the child as he has to complete his homework. ”

Gijubhai contented that teacher gets tired after the whole day’s teaching but a child is not considered to have any right for relaxation after a whole day’s learning activity at school. Why it is so, that the ghost of homework chases him back up to his home and does not allow him to sleep comfortably in night, neither give him the comfort of playing happily in the morning. Gijubhai suggested following measures to free child from his strained situation ─

·       First measure is to stop giving child any work to do at house. Child learns the subjects, refers to the textbooks, memorizes from the chapters in the school. It is enough for him to learn those things within those hours of school. After that, there remain so many other things worthy enough to be learnt by the child.
·       Gijubhai pointed out that due to the defective methodology adopted during teachings, the need of giving homework arises. If child is made to understand the concepts clearly that taught at the school, there hardly remain any need to give any home assignments.
·       Teacher should be saved from the misconception that true learning happens by memorizing things. It is the reason behind giving child so many things to memorize at home.
·       There should be provision in the school itself that child could finish his incomplete work during the last period. This period must be kept for recapitulation done for the whole day work.
